Everyone under the control of the master bandit suffers from some level of egomania, the belief that they are in control, that they can live to serve them "selves" and be "winners"; they don't like the idea that there is a Plan above theirs unfolding, that could be using them even when they're not willing to serve the Master Mind. A fool does not comprehend he is dealing with the Infinite Intelligence and the Infinite Power. So, searching for and buying the Truth or not, the King still rules above and over the "prince" who owns the world.
You know all those words the prophets deliver unto the people, warning them that if they don't repent, God would deliver them into the enemy's hands? That's the danger you're in when you aren't seeking to be delivered from that wicked womb and enjoying the darkness. It means some mind which suffers from a more severe egomania could cross your path there and find you unprotected against its plan of using you to have "joy", and at some point in the "future", which you too are going after, its "pleasure" could be to kill your body it can't have anymore.
Why do thieves who come to take from you the "goods" they want threaten to kill your body? Their message is, "Don't you want to live to keep seeking your idols? Then let me have mine". They don't believe a greater Good exists, which if they die possessing It not, will allow the evil spirits to grab their souls and drag them down to the ultimate deepest low feeling in hell, where at last no "thing" makes sense but it's too late to look for the Solution to the real problem. That means if you don't believe either, even if you obey the laws of "society", you'll end up down there with them.
